Starter / Brake lights

Postby Hat751 » Mon Aug 13, 2018 12:15 pm

Can anyone help. I have a XLC500 where the starter only operates when the brake light is on. How do I overide this? I understand its a safety issue and would consider connecting it to the clutch lever (like my motorbike). The clutch lever has a hole for a switch to be fitted. If I can overide it where can i get a switch for the clutch lever.

It's activated by a switch, on footbrake or handlebar lever. Doing the usual direct short will set the brake light on all the time. Not sure if they run thru the standard black and black/white kill switch wires. If so you could alter it at that point maybe. Why would you want to disable this though, or put it on clutch? It's not really an inconvenience unless you're trying to start the bike while moving

Did try replying several days ago on another computer but it wouldn't work.
The srarter only works when the brake lighs are on either foot or hand operated so probably wired into the brake light circuit, not switch operated.
I want to do it because I ride trails that are more technical at slow speed and even in slow moving traffic being able to re-start while still moving is an advantage.
I would prefer to have the override operational, but through the clutch lever.
Anybody any ideas?

Just to clarify that is exactly what I said, they are tied to the brakes. It's not the light itself but the switches on brake levers. Look at footbrake you'll see a plunger switch attached, and there will be a set of two wires attached to handlebar lever, these activate the brake light and also allow the starter motor to function. You would have to do some rewiring to achieve what you want, otherwise you'll put the brake light on every time u use the clutch.
